Wondering what you can expect to see on the shelves this year? Pantone knows. The official Color of the Year for 2012 is Tangerine Tango: “An enticing juicy orange… A vivacious and appealing refresher to enliven anyone’s outlook this spring.”
Pantone is known for their work with color matching. They make it possible for a piece of design work to change hands multiple times and stay true to the original.* What you may not know is that Pantone has taken it upon themselves to become experts in the world of color. They poll artists and designers about trends and inspirations. Every color in the Pantone catalogue has a description of what it looks like and what feelings it evokes. Their resource center is astonishing. If you have capital “F” Feelings about color, go to their website and play for a while. You’ll be glad you did.
One of the services Pantone provides is the fashion color report. After talking to designers about their upcoming looks, they put together a palette of the big colors for the season. This is what women have to look forward to in Spring 2012:
The men’s palette is similar, but a touch more sedate:
I am envious about the dude’s Granita and Grass Green. Hopefully there will be some overlap into the ladies’ fashion colors. The fashion world seems to feel the same way about this coming year as I do: it’s time for things to look up and have a little fun.
*It’s pretty amazing when you think about it. Because of Pantone, you can go from an artist’s sketch, to a digital rendering, to the finished product with the knowledge that your Pantone color will stay the same in every medium. It blows my mind.

My Aunt’s favorite color.
I’m not terribly fond of orange, but I don’t hate it. I do have a sweater I love that is roughly the same color, but… I like it because of the neck and cut, not the color.
Also, I just spent 45 minutes watching pantoneTV on youtube with my 3 year old niece because of this article.
I like that orange. I could never wear anything that color, but I wouldn’t mind accessorizing with pops of it in the house.
I’m digging the pink and blue colors though.
Well great, orange. If there’s a color I dislike in clothing .. I’ll just stick with the greens, blues and purples. I really like color charts though. I save paint color charts and stuff.
Hate on the orange people–do it!
Because I look awesome in orange and that means I will not be one of the masses wearing it!
I hate it when the colors I look best in become all trendy and vogue. But it does not sully my ongoing love for I know that those people will stop wearing it when Cosmo tells them to, but I won’t!
I love it when the things I like are in vogue, because I buy them up and then hoard them till new colors come in and my favorites get hard to find. I am a trend stockpiler.
I used to have to do that with black nailpolish. And now its everywhere. :(
It took me 3 reads of this article to realize that it wasn’t PanTENE. I kept thinking ‘wtf, Tangerine orange hair? Ugh’ (I mean, I just wouldnt look good with orange hair. Others might and do.)
Sodalite blue looks exactly like the “Peacock Blue” my sister has chosen for her wedding, so at least my dress is on trend!
Woo hoo! When I was batting the idea for this post around, everyone read Pantone as panettone, which is an Italian fruitcake.
Fruitcake and orange hair are in this year!
Aww, all the orange hate is making me sad.
I don’t hate it, I just don’t like it very much. I’m more of a cool colors and rainbows kind of girl.
My alma mater requires me to like orange. I just can’t help it.
No. Just, no.
First, I’m a redhead and as such, I don’t wear orange.
Second, I live in Tennessee – and I am never ever putting that God-awful color anywhere on my body. Even though Tango is not UT Orange, it’s in the color wheel. No. Just, God no.
I love Pantone. If they ever collaborated for Pantone nail polish I would die.
They make colored pencils, and each pencil has three adjectives describing the mood of the color. I want some so very badly.
OH. MY. GOD.
Waaaaant.
Oh god. Â THIS MUST HAPPEN. Â Can we choose a nail polish company and tweet them relentlessly until they give in?
I swear to god I did hear something about a Pantone nail polish collection.
Ugh. I had Feelings when Pantone announced Tangerine Tango. Very unhappy Feelings. I just hate that color.
So, what do I see when I open the Allure for January? That same damn color featured in their layouts. Gah!
Even in the color report shown above, it stands out like a sore thumb. Bah.
…I have feelings about color on the regular…
I also get pretty passionate about colors and, I’ll admit, I’m not a huge fan of the Tango either. I’ve never really liked orange, and we’re going to see a lot of it for a while. I do like all the other colors, though.
