Flashback OT: Top 40 Hits

Good Monday, Persephoneers! So glad to have you here, and to have a “here” for you to be. An interesting phenomena is happening in the Sally J minivan: my near seven-year-old has started to demand that I “turn it up!” Wow.

She goes nuts for LMFAO, Miley Cyrus, the Bieber, Adele, and KT Tunstall. She gets excited when the Beatles are on, and knows a few songs by heart. Which got me thinking to about what I was listening to in the first grade, and I don’t actually remember. I do remember getting a Walkman in the the seventh grade, along with several tapes. And before I entered into my “dark” phase where all I listened to was The Cure, I was a fan of some pretty bubble-gum pop myself. Tiffany and Debbie Gibson? You betcha.

How old were you when you started paying attention to the radio? What were your first tapes/CDs? How was your long weekend without us? Go ahead, talk it up!

I had the 45 of Peter Cetera’s Glory of Love. Still one of my favorite songs on the planet. I am completely unashamed of my Cetera love. If you would like to have nightmares, youtube the video for that song and be terrified of the non-stop crazy eyes.

The first song I really remember hearing on the radio was Kokomo, by the Beach Boys. I loooooved the Beach Boys. They were my first concert. My mom took me to see them at the baseball stadium (afternoon game followed by a concert) when I was around 8. The first CD I ever purchased with my own money was a Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons compilation.

Yeah. I was born in 1981, I’m just really old at heart.

The first CD I burned myself consisted of my favorite Pat Benatar, R.E.M, The Cranberries, and (embarrassingly) Creed songs. I listened to it constantly.

On another note, I have nine nieces and nephews. Seven of them are nephews. And I will throw a fit the next time I hear someone excuse their behavior because they’re boys. No, boys are not simply more of a handful than girls. No, boys do not simply like to run around and smash things and be rambuncious.

Guess what? YOU TEACH THEM TO DO THAT, WANKERS, BECAUSE YOU DON’T DISCIPLINE THEM AS HARSHLY WHEN THEY DO BAD.

It really pisses me off, because no matter how much I try to argue differently, they keep saying this shit. What if those boys grow up to believe it? What if they become men who don’t see women as people?

It worries me so much.
What happened at the end, when the “artifact” was brought through the lobby? I couldn’t really see what it was, nor did I understand the joke. Did the other firm send something purposely offensive to the applicants? It’s driving me crazy and I can’t find any discussion about it online!

Would love to talk about something in the premiere that doesn’t involve Zou Bisou Bisou…

The “artifact” was a joke from another firm making fun of SCDP’s equal opportunity ad – it was an African statue of some sort. But it went through a lobby filled with African Americans, and it was a pretty offensive joke. So to avoid being the subject of a protest of their own, Price went out and started accepting resumes from the women waiting in the lobby.
At least that’s how I read it.

Edit: DAMN IT HOW DO YOU SPOILER? WHY IS IT NOT WORKING?

Edit Edit: Ah. It’s square brackets, not pointy brackets.

THIS IS SPOILER-Y!
Yes I got that part! i just didn’t understand what the joke WAS. What was the artifact? It looked like a giant chocolate Easter bunny but I can’t imagine that’s right.
Edited because I still can’t get the spoiler thing working and crossing it out seems like it might hide it better for now?
Edited by Selena to drop in spoiler tag. : )
