At last the final decision is upon us. Find out who won yesterday’s two polls and vote for the ultimate winner of Middlemarch Madness II, after the break.
I’ll be right here tomorrow to crown the winner. Put on your fanciest blog-wear and we’ll make it a thing.
First up, your Young Adult champion is the inimitable Minerva McGonagall; your adult champion is Arya Stark.
Vote like you won’t get to do this again until next year.

McGonagall! Do it for the OAPs.
You know… I like to think that in a crossover universe, Arya grows up to be Minerva McGongall. So it’s a win for me, either way.
Also, still mourning Beatrice’s loss.
i am still mourning meg
brought my buddy Karl along to help me sort my feelings out.
I…I just can’t….No! You can’t make me pick one! No! *pouts*
TEAM LYRA!
Oh, wait.
I like to think Lyra and Arya could be friends. They’re only one letter apart.
There is only one thing we say to being knocked out of Middlemarch Madness.
OH SNAP!
I LOVE IT.
HOLY CRAP I LOVE THIS AND YOU.
I can’t claim credit for the art but otherwise, thank you:)
TEAM MCGONAGALL ALL THE WAY.
Oh I just don’t know. I want McGonagall als my granny and Arya as my little sister. Can you imagine the family meetings if I don’t chose one of them?
The fact that the YA rep is Prof M and the Adult Lit rep is Arya seems interesting to me.
Like it’s very highly balanced… Or ironic? Both?
SO true…
The same thought occurred to me!
I really am loving how hype we all are about this.
How many times do a bunch of people get together and go all-out for a badass heroine? Let alone placing her center stage?
GO LADY PROTAGONISTS!
As a rep for both Team JB Fletcher and Miss Marple, I feel it necessary to do my diligence to help those BAMFs who have come before all other BAMFs. And while, chronologically, Prof McGonagall may not have initially existed before Arya, her storyline is one to respect and her old lady bamfyness has inspired many others to become old lady BAMFs themselves.
Also, she’s wicked with a wand. I dig that.
THISTHISTHIS. BAMFs who can wreak righteous havoc in their twilight years? That is amazing.

I have feelings about this.
She is so damn badass, and just as a background character! Imagine how amazing she is when she’s the focus! SHE IS SOMEONE TO ASPIRE TO, not merely a figure of Oh She’s So Cool but someone you could in fact BE, if you too summon up her awesome qualities!
Please accept this offer of invitation to join Those Who Respect The Old Ladies Club.
There’s whiskey in our tea. And swear words in our cross-stitch. :)
I AM an Old Lady, doing shit with creaking knees deserves ALL the awards!
May I join too? This sounds like the perfect place to be. :)
It is the perfect place. :) You are more than welcome to join!
Wonderful! I shall bring some of those wonderful green apple and cheddar scones ReginaChristina taught us how to make here:Â http://persephonemagazine.com/2012/02/green-apple-cheddar-scones/
TEAM BADASS OLD BROADS. (unofficialy, of course.)
(of course!)
I wonder if McGonagall will win this just based on exposure since so many people have read Harry Potter. The HBO series has made Song of Ice and Fire (why does my brain want to call it Song of Fire and Ice so badly?!) more popular, but not quite to Harry Potter levels. At any rate, I love McGonagall but I’m 100% Team Arya on this one.
I wonder that, too.
BUT ARYA MUST WIN.
Yeah, Team Arya! Also, I <3 your avatar.
I <3 yours as well, for obvious reasons :)
Team McGonagall! A position reinforced by having read Philospher’s Stone to a poorly Juniper Junior this evening.
Team McGonagall!!!
WORD. When you need to be played by Dame Maggie Herself, you know you’re the biggest badass in the world.
What DOES that say about the Dowager Countess, I wonder?
ARYA ARYA ARYA
Gooooo ARYA
I had a gif of her death prayer that I want to post, but now can’t find it. Alas. She makes me want to adopt a little girl, and train her in the ways of badassery. (I would actually coddle my hypothetical daughter so much she’d be more likely to turn out like Sansa).
Fortunately, Sansa is also a badass. Just in different ways!
True! I am one of the only people I know who likes Sansa. She’s very sympathetic to me, and turns out to be a lot stronger than she appears at first.
I didn’t like Sansa very much at first, but she more than earned my respect. I felt so sorry for her, because in a lot of ways, she was the girl who followed the gender norms, but it screwed her over. She felt first-hand how little respect that really lent her in their patriarchal society.
She shows a hell of a lot of strength in the face of that.
Yes! She has the trajectory I think we all wanted Betty Draper/Francis to have in Mad Men.
She’s an interesting character, and she definitely grows and matures after everything she goes through in Kings Landing (and afterwards…). I often wonder if her character would be any different if (SPOILER from the first book) Lady hadn’t been killed. I love the connections between the Stark kids and the direwolves. I really, really want Arya and Nimeria meet up again.
A difficult decision, to be sure! However, I’m keeping my allegiance to Team Arya. Her badassery is just too much.
Um, where did Scout go? !?!?!?! This must be some terrible error!
I am totally voting for Arya to avenge Scout’s memory.
I think I will join you.
Me too. MMII has brought little but wailing and gnashing of teeth to Millieville. My flailing and shameless advocacy has been all for naught, naught I say! :(
Here’s a hedgehog with a strawberry hat for those of us commiserating:
This is absolutely adorable, and while I am sad for Scout and lover her dearly, I will not snub McGonagall so. She is way better than Arya. And at least this way, it’s staying in the YA family.
We are going to fight!
No, McGonagall and Arya shall fight, and it will beautiful to watch! A daring display of skill.
Hmm…you have a good point. ;)
Of course I do, I’m team McGonagall. ;)
Oh, now we ARE really going to fight. Have at you! :)
I absolutely love her to death, but I cannot believe McGonagall made it this far.
I love her too, but I am also a little surprised. I suspect it has something to do with Hermione not being around this year since she won last year, and because we have all fallen in love with Maggie Smith again by watching Downton Abbey.
Same.
I do love McGonagall, and Maggie Smith.
But…
ARYA.
I think Downton’s a factor too; Maggie Smith is the greatest. I’ll be happy if she wins, but also a little guilty that two Harry Potter ladies won in a row. I promise I read other things!
And I’m seriously considering making A Song of Ice and Fire my summer reading project. Or at least giving the TV show another shot. I feel left out!
TEAM ARYA! No offense to Prof McGonagall, whom I love, but Arya has out-badassed just about everyone there is, and she’s not even a teenager yet.
