Lunchtime Poll: Truth or Dare Dreams

It’s the last day of May! The year’s almost half-over. Let’s play some truth or dare.

Truth: What’s a goal this year that you haven’t yet accomplished but that is nagging at you? Mine is to finish this snotty paper about Detroit, time, politics, and space.

Dare: Take an impromptu trip someplace that’s at least an hour away this weekend. It might be the beach, a new restaraunt, or to visit a friend. I don’t care where you go, but get away! I’m taking my mom on her first backpacking trip this weekend. It should be fun!

My food groups are cheese, bacon, and hot tea. I like studying cities and playing with my cat, Buffy.

My truth is to get published- in an academic journal, not like a novel. I’ve got three different articles *mostly* done, but I’ve been putting them off and putting them off while I work on other things (dissertation?!), and my lab advisor has been really patient about how lax I’ve been…. usually someone at my point in the grad school process should have 3-5 articles published or submitted for review.

And I totally get to do the dare, too! I was planning on going up to VT Saturday for the Strolling of the Heifers Parade. There will be free samples of dairy products as far as the eye can see! And cows! I’m excited.

Well, my internship is in Brooklyn, and it takes me about 1.5 hours to get there…then have to take another 1.5 hour trip to work, which is not near my house…does that count for daring?

Completely unrelated, I’m moving to philly for school, but have no idea how to find a place to live. Is c-list reliable? Do I want roommates? (Do you want a roommate?) I’ll preface this by saying I have no experience apartment-hunting. School housing was all on-campus and I went by room size/whatever everyone else is doing, then I moved home after graduation. (Could this be my truth? Finding a home? If not, I’d like to be better at making friends.)

Also, what should I look for in a hostel? In NY, not philly. I live in NJ, with no car, and my bestie is visiting from NZ in early july and we wanted a safeish, cleanish place that was less expensive than a hotel to crash after late/all-night shenanigans.

Yes, ladies (and gentlemen), I’m a complete and utter failure at grown up things. I’m seriously in amazement that I even got into grad school.

I get to do the dare on Sunday morning- I get to go with a friend to stalk a prospective minister for our church as they preach. It’s about an hour and a half out of our way, but the weather should be good for a nice drive. Later that day is RIBFEST. OMG ALL THE RIBS, IN MY MOUTH.

Truth: I need to get a job, a good job, this year- especially now to pay my impending rent bills. But I can’t make real progress until our move is accomplished in August, so right now I’m applying for social assistance, which feels shameful :( My parents tell me it’s not a big deal but it FEELS like one.
