Make some popcorn, ladies, we’re starting a movie club!
Since the book club has been so much fun, I thought we all might enjoy a movie club, too. Some of the themes I’ve thought of are:
- Rewatching childhood favorites to see how we view them differently as adults.
- Classics that all of us should have seen.
- 80s slumber party favorites, so we Olds can share our favorites with those of you who (gulp) weren’t born at that point.
- Movies that pass the Bechdel Test.
- Movies with badass women.
- Movies that are in some way related to current theatrical releases (prequels, original versions of remakes).
In the comments, let me know what movies you’d be interested in watching. I do think we should skip new releases since they can be cost-prohibitive and not always available in all areas at the same time; movies that are easily available on DVD/Netflix/download would be preferable. On Friday night, I’ll post the suggestions so we can vote on our first film, and I’ll announce the winner next week.

I’m super late to the party and due to bad family things happening I haven’t been very active on Persephone in the past month, but I am just so excited for Movie Club! I’m off to bed soon so I’ll come up with some suggestions other than the ones I gave you on Facebook later.
Maria Full of Grace, Hairspray (John Waters version), Â A League of Their Own, A Little Princess, Adventures in Babysitting, Welcome to the Dollhouse (also Palindromes), Boys Don’t Cry, Sister Act, Steel Magnolias, Serenity, Winter’s Bone, Where the Heart Is, Addams Family Values, Whale Rider, Heavenly Creatures…
I should stop now.
I was an extra in Where the Heart Is!
This is awesome and I love movies and I love many of the movies people have already suggested!
But now I have to be a downer and point out that the first three categories of movies listed can easily exclude movies featuring women of color. Could The Powers That Be please remember to consider us WOC when choosing movies for this club?
Possible starting points: http://www.clutchmagonline.com/2012/05/crowdsourcing-a-bechdel-test-for-people-of-color/ Â Â Â http://theangryblackwoman.com/2009/09/01/the-bechdel-test-and-race-in-popular-fiction/
TL;DR: Please god, no Long Duk Dong.
Absolutely. Thank you for bringing this up; I meant to include that as a suggestion and apparently forgot. I apologize.
This is a really good idea!
Maybe both versions of Imitation of Life, the one with Claudette Colbert and the other with Lana Turner?
I love love love this idea. I know not everyone has Netflix instant, but perhaps we can get a count to see if that’s an appropriate medium to rally around.
My faves (and on the top of my head): Whip It, I heart Huckabees, Annie Hall, anything French (I have some recommendations, my fave is 50s-60s French musical-esque, esp with Catherine Deneuve)…
I’m SO SO in on this.
I like the Netflix idea. Also perhaps Amazon instant?
Oh this might be easier to follow than a book club. If the world of downloads cooperate.
Since we’re all making lists…
HIGH FIDELITY.
And follow-up: Empire Records.
