The black dog has been sniffing under my door lately, so I’ve been seeking out soothing things to watch. Here are my choices. What are yours?
Cosmos: Carl Sagan’s musings on the wonder of everything is perfect when things are a little bleak.
The Life of Mammals: I make no secret of my love for David Attenborough, and The Life of Mammals is one of my favorites of his productions. Like Sagan, there’s something that helps me feel better when I’m listening to someone talking about how amazing the world is.
Stephen Fry in America: I mean, Stephen Fry is amazing anytime. This series is of the great man wandering around the U.S. driving a London Taxi Cab. It’s lovely. Just lovely.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: We make no secret of our love for Buffy on this here blog, but I have a deep love for everyone’s favorite slayer when I need a little pick-me-up. There’s something about watching someone who can save the world all while looking good in a pair of cute, yet comfortable boots that makes it all better. If you’re looking for some awesome retro recaps, check out Slay Belle’s amazing posts.
Shiba Inu Puppy Cam: Oh yes, it’s back, folks. Those little adorable pups are much more powerful than the black dog.

I might have destroyed some ear drums with the sound I made over that puppy cam.
I’d also make a bid for Frozen Planet and my personal favourite, A Midsummer Night’s Dream: naked Christian Bale! Bicycles! Tuscany! Kevin Kline with donkey ears.
On TV, you cannot pry me away from Time Team (I <3 you Phil. Never change) and I also quite like Grand Designs.Â
There is a half-hour documentary on Netflix about beavers called just Beavers, and it’s great. I don’t know why it’s so soothing, but it is.
I would watch a documentary about beavers.
I am soothed by mystery shows from the 70s and 80s, like Murder, She Wrote and Quincy M.E.
And may I also suggest finding an aquarium or a friend’s fish tank or something? I didn’t put much stock in the idea that watching fish was soothing until I got a fish, and suddenly half an hour would pass while I was staring at him swimming around.
This would not be soothing for me because, and this is embarrassing, but fish in fish tanks make me insanely nervous. what if the glass breaks? What if I am surrounded by fish!
Oh no! I can understand that, though. Some people like butterflies and would love to go to one of those special butterfly tents where you can hold them and such. GOOD LORD NO. *shudder* Keep me away from those things flying at my face.
