Feeling blue about the end of summer? Cheer up, bluebells, there’s still a little time left before Labor Day. And if that thought doesn’t brighten you up, maybe this little concoction will. It’s a refreshing mix of Summer’s best, and only requires a few ingredients and some light berry-squishing. The Summertime Blues makes a good mocktail without the rum as well, in case you’d like to jump into your convertible and take off for the beach before Autumn arrives and ruins all the fun.

You will need:
¼ C. Fresh (or frozen) blueberries
½ t. brown sugar
1 T. fresh-squeezed lemon juice
2 ounces light rum
Ginger ale
Drop the blueberries into the bottom of a large glass or mason jar. Add the brown sugar and lemon juice and smash everything together nicely with a muddler or a plain old spoon. After the brown sugar has dissolved somewhat, fill the glass with ice and add the rum. Fill to the top with ginger ale and stir to create a lovely blue color. Serves one soon-to-be-cheerful person.
Adapted (with a few changes) from Nancy Mitchell, from her great blog, The Backyard Bartender.

You are so invited to my house whenever you want to come over. We can stand on my tiny deck and drink delicious things.
Lovely! Â Can’t wait.
That looks to be exceedingly yummy. Good to hear it works without the rum – I don’t drink alcohol, and it’s so awesome to come across drinks like this that can work without alcohol!
This looks fabulous! Blueberries are by far my favorite summer fruit.
Do you think this would work well with gin?
The gin-gingerale combo is one I’ve never tried before, although it could work. Â Gin is a finicky guest at the party, being herbal and strong. Â Let me know if you try it. Â Also, Vodka gets along very well with ginger ale, like in the Moscow mule.
Hooray for you, fellow bluebells! Wishing you all kinds of berry-squishing fun.
I want to put this in my mouth. Nom nom. And I happen to have some rum, which I never know what to do with….
This sounds so good…without rum, though.
Absolutely. Â I’ll try to make a mocktail version of any future drinks as well. Â Thanks for commenting!
I think I could drink 7 of those. And then fall over when I try to stand because I have zero alcohol tolerance, but yet love me some fizzy goodness.
That looks so good!
I like being called “bluebells” :D
Oh.
My.
God.
THIS LOOKS SO GOOD.
