What’s something you usually buy that you wish you could make all by yourself?
I’ve been experimenting this week trying to make the Blue Diamond Cocoa Almonds. If I make it work, I’ll post the recipe. I think I’m getting close.
What would you like to make?

This might be the hippiest answer of all time, but…. kombucha. If I can get my mitts on a starter, I’ll make it myself, but until then, I buy those goddamn $3 bottles when I can.
A gal at work made her own. I tried it, but I don’t like that stuff to begin with, so I didn’t care for it. Everyone else seemed to like it, though!
I usually buy the cranberry ones, so if I made it myself, I’d probably do some sort of fruity tea too. My husband thinks it’s gross, so MORE FOR ME. I’ve tried the kind with chia seeds in it …. it is sort of like drinking the non-junk food version of that weird Orbitz drink from the 90s.
HOLLANDAISE!!! *shakes fist*
You and me both lady, you and me both.
Bread. Â I fear yeast.
You can make bread with nothing but flour and beer, if that helps!
And it’s just as yummy!
That Mark Bittman no knead bread recipe from the NYT a few years back works really well.
looking up right now….thanks! Â This is like therapy!
Spanakopita. I have slight fear of working with phyllo.
Pie crusts! Â I can never get them as light and flaky as store bought.
Have you tried the vodka pie crust from Cook’s Illustrated? It solved the flakiness problem for me…

My secret is using Crisco (solid vegetable shortening, I’ve seen it called olio, as well) instead of butter. It’s probably worse for a body than butter in the long run, but it makes a great, flaky crust that stands up to any filling. Also, don’t over mix. Use a fork instead of an electric mixer and blend your crust ingredients just long enough for everything to stick together.
Crisco is great for that, yes! Though my mom always used a combo of butter AND crisco, and that worked wonders.
Ehhhh.
An insanely perfect crème brulee. Or soufflé. That they look and taste as perfect as possible.
Now THAT is a worthy goal.
I know right? I would love to be soufflé girl, invited to every dinner in hopes of bringing one.
I would like to make preserves at home (jams, pickles, etc.), but the whole process intimidates me.
More types of soup (I have a good chicken-and-veggie recipe and a really good chili). Also, bread.
And far fewer job rejections, and more interviews and MAYBE even a real grown up job.
I approve of all of these things.
I appreciate your approval.
Fella makes the BEST sandwiches. So we joke about how he needs to get in the kitchen and make me a sammich (even if my soups and my stir-fry are superior). Also he has more beer knowledge. I would like more of that.
Macaroni and cheese. My mom has this fantastic recipe that I’ve never really been able to duplicate. I always just get the box stuff
