Lunchtime Poll

This Lunchtime Poll is in Disguise

Halloween is a mere five weeks away, so it’s time to start tossing around costume ideas.

Aside from a few years ago when a bunch of us plotted to dress like a coworker who wore the exact same thing every day (the look on his face was priceless) and the time I went as an urban Communist (Che Guevara shirt, army-style pants, leather armband, disdain for the ruling class), I haven’t dressed up in ages. It was so much easier in college when we’d just sneak stuff out of the costume locker at the theater department; now I have to put a bit more thought into it since I’ll either have to buy something or make it myself. What are your favorite costume ideas? Pics if you got ’em!

Hillary is a giant nerd and former Mathlete. She once read large swaths of "Why Evolution is True" and a geology book aloud to her infant daughter, in the hopes of a) instilling a love of science in her from a very young age and b) boring her to sleep. After escaping the wilds of Waco, Texas and spending the next decade in NYC, she currently lives in upstate New York, where she misses being able to get decent pizza and Chinese takeout delivered to her house. She lost on Jeopardy.

last year, i was lazy, i got devil horns at a yard sale for .25 and put on my blue dress.  Devil in a blue dress..i have no clue this year. I always make my kids great costumes, and i will not buy them. I was standing in Target last year with the Spanish dancer costume in my hand for my 6 year old with 2 days until the Halloween party at school, and I just could not do it… I stayed up late and made and even better costume for her.

This year a group of lady friends and I are doing a group costume thing where they are going to be Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, and I am going as the Wood Cutter. We plan on doofing it up and going as “sexy” versions (as more of a overdone joke than a legitimate attempt at sex appeal) with Little Red being all 50s pin up, Wolf being more inner city club style, and Wood Cutter being sexy tomboy. This more or less lines up with our wardrobes anyway, so the most any of us will need is a piece or two, and we plan on going thrifting for them.

Last year I was Zoe from Doctor Who because a friend of mine threw a Doctor Who themed party. It was amazing how many people didn’t recognize me with a wig on.

arghh, I’m going through Halloween anxieties. I feel like I have to do something awesome, and don’t know if I want to do a couple themed something or not. You see, my partner (we’re domestically partnered now, it’s weird) has zero ability to work on costume creation so a couple themed costume would come down to me rather than the two of us, or do I just do something for myself and leave him high and dry (and probably doing a kilted man for the 3rd year in a row?) My top three choices currently are 1) Ms. Frizzle 2) Belle from Beauty and the Beast (but the blue dress not that ugly ballgown) and 3) doctor who, either the doctor, the TARDIS or a Dalek dress. Suggestions welcome!

I have a couple of go-to costumes right now because I have all the pieces readily available. The first is a pirate/rogue and the second is a Hogwarts student (Ravenclaw). The pirate/rogue is usually saved for warm weather, and the Ravenclaw is for cool weather because it involves a long sleeved shirt and tie, a wool sweater, long pants, a robe, and a scarf.
