I read in phases. I don’t read any books for a month or two, and then I need to read ALL OF THE BOOKS! I’ll stay up way later than I should and carry my Kindle in my purse with me, just in case I have a few extra minutes to get a chapter or two in.
Right now, I’m reading the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. They’re great to wind down to at the end of the night. Sometimes, I like a book that doesn’t make me have to think too much.
So, bookish ladies, what are you reading at the moment?

I have like six half-finished books right now. I’m working my way through the P-Mag book review archives. It’s led me to some great finds.
I’m reading Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street and A Generous Orthodoxy. I tend to pick up about two or three books at a time and be at various points in all of them. Eventually, I finish them all up, or I give up on the least interesting one. I usually have a book with me in my backpack or purse for the wait-times in my day.
When god was a rabbit. Almost finished it but still don’t know how I think about it. I don’t really like books that take their time and in which very little happens, but somehow I keep ending up with them because of attractive cover blurbs.
I just finished Dick Van Dyke’s memoir and a volume of Pablo Neruda’s poetry. I’m also in the midst of Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
I’m reading Such a Pretty Fat by Jen Lancaster. This is the 3rd book of hers I’ve read in a row, so her style is getting a bit redundant, but overall, I enjoy the books as a way to relax before bed. I am also halfway through Some of My Friends Are Black, an interesting book about school integration, but had to put it down for a few weeks b/c I’ve been stressed and have needed a relaxing bedtime book rather than one that makes me think.
In my reading “queue” are Libba Brae’s The Diviners and Bryn’s new book!
I usually read on the bus on my way to and from work. I’ve been reading a lot of books about reigning queens, particularly British ones, but right now I’ve branched out to plain old famous queens with Marie Antoinette: The Journey, by Antonia Fraser.
I started 1Q84 a while ago, and ugh, some really disgusting stuff starts going on about halfway though. I didn’t know what I was getting into, and I don’t think I’m going to finish it.
I recently read the first few pages of Cloud Atlas, but I feel like I need to sit and read it for hours at a time, and I don’t really have time. I’ve heard great things, though, so I’ll try.
I do the same thing. I’ll start like 3 books in one week and then I’ll stop reading for a month.
I just finished ‘Gone Girl’ last week and now I’m reading Bryn Donovan’s ‘Sole Possession’ as well as a couple of books about writing.
I’m trying to listen to Gone Girl on audiobook now, and just can’t get into it. Nick’s just coming across as an asshole and I am having trouble sympathizing with him enough to listen to his POV. Does it get better?
It definitely get better! And Nick is supposed to be coming across as an asshole. It’s hard to explain why without the risk of posting a spoiler but it’s good that you can’t sympathize with him.
Pretty much everyone is an asshole in that book.
It gets SO GOOD. Keep going.
oo, I’m a reader to the ridiculous degree. Right now working my way through Ken Follet’s second book in the Century Trilogy. Started off slow but now getting pretty gripping. Good thing today’s my birthday so I plan to lay on the couch and read a lot!
I’m reading Old Man’s War by John Scalzi. I picked up the humble bundle ebook bundle with it in it. It’s pretty good, and a far more interesting read than Starship Troopers to which I have heard it compared.
I loved that book. That book was the thing that convinced me to get a kindle :) four hour car ride crammed in the backseat of a small car with three people and my friend next to me was reading it on his kindle.
I bought the humble ebook bundle, too, and am looking forward to that and the Neil Gaiman and Cory Doctorow. Old Man’s War is supposed to be one of the best sci fi novels–I heard about it on that giant flowchart of NPR’s top 100 sci fi and fantasy books.
I’m making my way through that too – the “Flute Girls” story is still haunting me and I read it last week. I’ve actually never read any Doctorow books, am intending to remedy that soon…
