Lunchtime Poll: Pizza Party

Ah, pizza. The most perfect of foods. I’d kill for a slice right now.

What toppings do you like on your pizza? I usually stick with plain cheese (with a ton of added parmesan, of course!), but sometimes if I’m particularly hungry, I will go for pepperoni, sausage, or chicken.

I am known to have bizarre food preferences and one of these is that I hate pizza. Well all leavened bread actually (excepting brioche because eggs) and really dislike tomato sauce. So if I’m coerced into ordering pizza it is going to have the thinnest crust possible (like cracker thin) and alfredo sauce preferably with feta, bacon, and pineapple. I also hate chocolate and caramel. Come at me!

I’m curious if you have an opinion about the Papa John’s political stance taken last week and the activist movement to all eat at our local pizzeria’s on Friday to protest against Papa John not wanting to provide their employees with health benefits? That aside, my absolute fave pizza is goat cheese, artichoke and pesto…that is when it’s not pepperoni, mozzarella, and tomato sauce, or anchovies and olives and, well, I just LOVE pizza!

I think the Papa John’s guy is a sore loser and an idiot. He can give away two million free pizzas but he can’t afford 14 cents per pizza to give his employees health insurance? While he lives in an enormous mansion with a freaking drawbridge? No more of his pizza for me. I actually hadn’t heard about the local pizzeria protest for Friday, but we wound up getting pizza from our favorite local place tonight. Small pizza places are almost always better than the chains anyway; they’re just usually a bit more expensive.

If it’s just me eating a pizza, then it’s mushrooms and green peppers. If it’s me an my husband, then it’s eggplant (if available), cheese, or Greek (spinach, FETA, black olives, onions).

Funnily enough, we’re having a pizza party on Friday, so we will be having the latter two at our party. I might see if I can talk him into a mushroom pizza for me. Heh.

I had this convo last night actually :) The consensus was ‘it depends;’ some places are better for mega-toppings than others. My chain-store preference is usually ‘mega supreme,’ but for the smaller joints I may go for stylized ones (like buffalo chicken or spinach and feta) or just pepperoni & sausage. There are very few places that I would get just cheese, because then the crust, sauce, and cheese have to be good enough to not feel like it’s missing something. I try to go as lean on crust as possible, but some places have better thin crust than others, so I go as thin as the place supports :)

In a perfect world, though, it’ll always have some kick; jalapenos, crushed red pepper…
