Hillary is a giant nerd and former Mathlete. She once read large swaths of "Why Evolution is True" and a geology book aloud to her infant daughter, in the hopes of a) instilling a love of science in her from a very young age and b) boring her to sleep. After escaping the wilds of Waco, Texas and spending the next decade in NYC, she currently lives in upstate New York, where she misses being able to get decent pizza and Chinese takeout delivered to her house. She lost on Jeopardy.

I went downstairs to get something out of my car and my roommate was soaking her feet in my $35 stock pot. Seriously, it’s the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen anyone do with a cooking vessel. She acted like bleach was going to make me forget about her feet being IN MY STOCK POT.
I told her I would never be able to cook in it again and that she needs to buy me a new one. And it better be the exact same thing because I have a matching saute pan.
Is it unreasonable that I think this is so disgusting I almost puked on sight?
I wouldn’t think it was that disgusting – the power of bleach is pretty strong – but I do think it was very inconsiderate.
There is not enough bleach in the entire world to make me forget the image of her blistery feet soaking in that pot. If someone cooked you a meal and then told you they use the same pot to soak their feet but they bleach it afterwards, what would your reaction be?
Like I said – I would think it was weird and inconsiderate but not necessarily unhygienic, depending on how they cleaned it.
Um, that is completely horrible and your reaction was totally reasonable. WHO DOES THAT?
I know, right. It’s just so disgusting. I can’t even fathom the thought process that goes into this decision. Oh wait, yes I can it goes like this:
Oh! There’s an object that’s big enough for my feet and isn’t mine! That will totally work!!
Also, she has a stock pot of her own that’s the same diameter, just shorter that would have worked just as well.
Oh wow. That’s so gross. Now I would always be wondering what else the roommate had used different cookware for…
And really- who soaks their feet?? And what do they soak them in? I thought that kind of thing was in the days of my grandma…
That was my other roommate’s same reaction!!!!! Now I just want to bleach all of my things and store everything in my room. So, so, so gross.
