The P-Mag editors once passed around the idea that folks are usually either a cook or a baker, with limited crossover.
I’m firmly in the baker camp. I will make cookies, cakes, pies, and sticky buns with gusto, but I get cranky if I have to cook anything more complicated than macaroni and cheese.
What about you, readers? Are you a cook, a baker, or that rare kitchen unicorn, both?

Baker. I like baking. I tolerate cooking.
Also, apparently my banana bars are addictive. My prof asked if one of the ingredients was methamphetamine. :D
I used to be firmly planted in the baker territory, but with the freedom of (judging) eyes I slowly start to have fun with my cooking experiments. But baking is still more hobby, more ‘let’s-have-some-fun’ than cooking.
Unicorn FTW! I’m not a perfect cook, or perfect baker, but I do pretty well with both. Juniper Junior has in fact made sure I know we’re making gingerbread and pancakes tomorrow. He, I think, is a baker.
It takes a blue moon and wild hair to get me to do either with any sort of enjoyment. My sister, however, is the unicorn who loves to cook and bake, so I blame her. She got them both, and I got neither.
Cook, definitely! Though I do occasionally bake bread, cornbread, or brownies. I have zero patience for making cookies. But I can cook all kinds of things and I’m happy to do it, most of the time.
Actually, now that I think about it, it’s my husband who is more likely to make bread now. And he’s one of those strange baker-types that rarely look at a recipe and yet it still comes out good. His pizza crusts are awesome (hint: use real sugar coke or pepsi. Or cheap champagne!)
Yay rare kitchen unicorn! I am a mean cook in the kitchen (mean as in good, not mean as in I will verbally abuse you while I am cooking) and I have been a wicked good baker since my mom let me have measuring cups. But rarely do the two mix in the same day, oddly. I think my dual skill comes from the fact that my mom is an amaaaaaazingly good cook, but she is not at all a baker. So she always gave me that title because I liked baking and it gave me something to do. But I also managed to pick up a lot of her cooking skillz at the same time. (Hint: butter. always butter.) Double-win for me!
I’m clearly a baker. I don’t care for cooking very much and if I could just eat out all the time I would. But I love baking. Love it, love it.
Both. I, personally, don’t see a huge difference between cooking and baking. Both have a recipe (sometimes). I’m an organic chemist; thus, I follow recipes for a living. :-)
I like to do both, but I don’t often get time, so I end up being more of a cook than a baker since that has to be scheduled in my day anyway. However, on breaks, I’m very much in the bakers’ camp.
