I love Betsey Johnson; even though some of her colorful frocks are just a bit too out there for me, I love her fearless attitude and ability to make every day seem like something to celebrate. That’s why I am excited about her new reality show, XOX, Betsey Johnson, which premieres May 12 on the Style Network.
Not much is known about the show thus far, except it will, of course, follow around Betsey and her daughter, Lulu. The Style Network is airing ads for the show that give away absolutely nothing about it, and their website is of no help either. While Betsey has had some business-related drama recently (she had to close down most of her stores a year or so ago, although the brand is still in existence under Steve Madden’s umbrella), I don’t expect the show to be like that at all. I’m sure we’ll see what it’s like to get ready for a fashion show, the design process, weekend parties, etc. Every time I see an interview with her, she seems happy and excited, and I think the show will reflect her positive attitude.
If you don’t know much about Betsey, here’s a very short primer: she’s still designing at the age of 70, decades after she first came up in New York City during the 1960s. She designed for others until 1978, when she started her own line, and continues to create everything from dresses to purses to handbags. Many of her frocks feature bright colors (she especially loves pink) and patterns including lightning bolts, cherries, skulls, and other eclectic items. Do a Google image search; you’ll be entertained for hours.
Because fashion takes itself so seriously, I look forward to seeing the irreverent Ms. Johnson on our screens in May. Are you a fan of Betsey’s? Will you watch the show?

I’d be interested in watching she just seems so naturally zany. I wanted a Betsey Johnson tea party dress for my sweet sixteen, they were way out of my price range to it never happened, but I’m seriously considering getting one for my 30th in a few years. I love the over the top-ness of her stuff. I may have, on accident of course, purchased a completely impractical pair of her shoes last year. I love them!
I used to follow the Galadarling blog and she was so all over Betsey Johnson all the time (and her wig, oh ye gods, the wigs) that I really had a Betsey overdose without ever stepping into one of her stores (although that happened three years ago and I liked how colourful all of it was).
I do very much like her attitude though. Maybe a little bit an American Westwood?
