Come on Nanny Ogg!

– she is one of the most powerful – if not the most powerful witches on the Discworld
– she summons demons with a wooden spoon and a scrubbing board
– she is an excellent (if somewhat disturbing) cook (see The Joye of Snacks and its famous Carrot and Oyster Pie…) “Nanny Ogg quite liked cooking, provided there were other people around to do things like chop up the vegetables and wash the dishes afterwards.”
– she once turned her cat into a human, and he got into the habit of it
– she has a very thick skull and keeps everything she might ever need in her knickers
– she’s the mother of the entire army of Lancre (and 14 other people)
– she’s so awesome, she got put on a stamp:

While I am admittedly uneducated on Madeleine L’Engle novels, I have read A Wrinkle In Time at least 8 times, though not for a few years. (Note to self: Re-read soon.) Meg Murry is AMAZING. She’s a genius. She’s tough. She loves her little brother and her father so much she travels through space and time to save them from a planet in which sameness is the most important thing. Does she have an amazing skill with bows and arrows? No. Does she come from a dystopia? No. In all honesty, Meg Murry comes from a very nice, quiet suburban life. She’s the child of two smart people. She has brothers. She gets in trouble at school for her smart mouth. And she CONTINUALLY SAVES THE UNIVERSE. Katniss just kind of stumbles through her angry teenagerhood and dangerous PTSD.

Go forth and READ.

Meg is badass. She saves her father; she travels through space and time; she saves the universes (several times); she psychically communicates with her brother and her dog… and we get to go with her not only when she’s an angry, awkward teenager, but when she’s hugely pregnant, and when she’s older… they are wonderfully strange books.

Meg Murry is a normal (if brilliant) high school kid who saves the universe. Thrice. Twice with love and stubbornness, once with love and stubbornness and TELEPATHY. AND as an adult she gets her PhD in math once all of her kids are in school (because she remembers resenting that HER mother was busy with her in-home lab and had earned a Nobel Peace Prize before she, Meg, hit puberty).

And when she saved the universe, she ALSO saved her dad. And her baby brother. And she was in the midst of the Teenage Snit at the time, but used that angst in her favor.

Basically, Meg Murry is a lifelong badass.
