Lunchtime Poll: Camping Hacks

It’s summer, which means camping, an activity that seems to bring out the ingenuity in all of us. There’s nothing quite like trying to figure out how to finish a task without the proper tools and succeeding, and camping brings that out in all of us. Well, most of us.

About a month ago, Buzzfeed posted an article of 41 camping hacks. It reminds me of how every year, my wife’s family will freeze a gallon of water and put it in their cooler – a free and efficient way to keep the cooler cool, along with cold water the whole trip.

What are some of your own camping hacks? Or have you tried any from the Buzzfeed article?

I was a Girl Scout for 12 years. I hate camping, but I’m good at it. My favorite fire starters are cardboard egg box with paper shreds or sawdust packed in the egg cubbies and wax poured in on top. Tear one or two off and pop em under the kindling.

Instant oatmeal is a super food for camping when it gets chilly at night. Getting hot food first thing in the morning makes a huge difference.

Hollow out an apple. Refill apple with mixture of apple bits, celery, raisins, and peanut butter. Best trail snack ever.

I LOVE camping. I actually love backpacking. The best thing you can do is get a food dehydrator. They’re pretty cheap and you can dehydrate things like pasta sauce which you then rehydrate for a delicious meal.

Also, those Ex Officio undies are obscenely expensive, but for backpacking, they are easy to wash and dry in a second.

Brilliant! I never would have considered dehydrating pasta sauce- okay, I didn’t think of using the dehydrator at all, lol. Will have to do that for next year!

I’d never heard of Ex Officio before (of course, I’m not a huge camping guru.) They ARE expensive, but might try them anyway for more hardcore camping =)
