Rock icon and international treasure Lou Reed, former frontman of The Velvet Underground, passed away yesterday.
I bought my first VU album in Athens, Greece, on a theater trip in college. When I got home, I shared it with my dad, and we’ve bonded over Lou Reed ever since.
Tell me a story about an album or song that’s been important to you, readers.

I’m going to talk about Lou in tomorrow’s Record Machine, but I must admit that my first intro to him was “Perfect Day” on the Trainspotting soundtrack, when I was 14 years old. Ever since, it’s been one of my favorite songs.
From what I’ve read, it seems like “Perfect Day” was one of the songs he was proudest of.
There are some text-formatting issues due to some of our old server-jumps, but here’s what I had to say about “Perfect Day” in my Alphabet Soup column: http://persephonemagazine.com/2012/08/alphabet-soup-favorite-songs-for-the-letter-p/
“I Love You, Suzanne” also gets an Honorable Mention here: http://persephonemagazine.com/2012/07/alphabet-soup-favorite-songs-for-the-letter-i/#more-85994
I was introduced to Lou Reed during my freshman yr of college by a friend who was OBSESSED with Lou. I never got into his stuff that much, but when I look back on that year, it featured repeated listens to the Live – Take No Prisoners album, which had just come out, and which I still will quote at random (and am hipsterishly pleased when no one gets the reference.)
