Friday News Bites: Nefarious Undertakings, Equality Progress, Corgis, and More

While it’s heartening to see marriage equality and other similar matters experiencing an avalanche-like amount of progress, I wish I could give you all an entirely happy news roundup again this week. Unfortunately, too much has happened that must be shared.

First up, though, Illinois is the most recent state to recognize same-sex marriages. The law goes into effect on June 1st.

The U.S. Senate has approved the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, with a vote of 64-32. The bill that would give workplace protections to LGBT employees would normally now go on to the House, but it is not expected to come up for a vote. Because John Boehner is an asshole. (I maaaaay be editorializing.)

In more unusual politics news, Philadelphia has elected the first member of the Whig party in 157 years.

Here, let’s look at a photo to sooth ourselves before we move on to more serious news:

Hey, by the way, AT&T is totally okay with the C.I.A. paying them for phone records. No judicial order required.

In the Detroit area, a 19-year-old woman, Renisha McBride, was shot and killed by a homeowner when she knocked on the door asking for help, post-car accident. The homeowner is not in custody, and McBride’s family wants answers.

In bad news-maybe-good-news-too: Reports of sexual assault in the U.S. military are on the rise, but the Senate is also considering various bills to change how the military justice system handles these reports.

In good news-but-bad-news-too: Mexican Coke is switching from real sugar to high fructose corn syrup for the bottles they sell in Mexico. Yet they will continue to export their cane sugar product to the U.S. Still… Does this mean we will eventually lose “real” Mexican Coke?

Okay, let’s have some good news:

Buzzfeed has hired Isaac Fitzgerald as their books editor. I know it’s easy to make fun of Buzzfeed lists, but Isaac has done excellent work for both The Rumpus and McSweeney’s, so I’m excited to see what he’ll do with this new job.

Finally, Grumpy Cat went to Disneyland. The results are predictably adorable.

See you next week.
