A: Most messy rooms can be dealt with using very much the same set of steps, with adjustments made for the type of room it is. When someone just needs to be told where to start, my answer can usually be broken down as follows:

This is pretty much what we did today with the kitchen. It had slipped from usual standards after one thing and another, but bit by bit it came together.
I often work “top to bottom” or start in one corner and work my way out. That way, I can see that something has been cleaned and have some motivation to keep going.
