This week’s Kickstartable caught my eye as I was browsing. It’s a beautifully illustrate book of whimsy, and I do hope you’ll check it out. I asked author Sarah Kaufman a few questions about her project.
Is this the first book you’ve written?
Yes it is! I have illustrated a book for a friend before, but this is the first one that I have written and that reflects my artwork and vision.
How did you decide to write a story about the circus? Did you draw on childhood memories?
Hasn’t everyone wanted to run away to the circus as a kid? Well, being scared of heights, terribly clumsy, and tender-hearted towards animals, I didn’t pursue it. But the circus in my mind is better for me anyway! I always liked the idea of a circus run by the animals, and the people were just customers and extras!
Do you have ideas for more children’s books?
Oh sure, but I’m taking it one book at a time!
What was the most challenging part of this Kickstarter project?
Well, getting started was tough because I didn’t know how to make a video, but with my Mac it was pretty straightforward! Also the uncertainty of reaching my goal, because if I don’t, I won’t get to keep any of the money I raised. So it is kind of like gambling or playing the stock market, except with something I love and created.
What has been the most pleasant surprise?
Finding out about all the people who appreciate my work and have shown up to support my book. I’ve been overwhelmed by all the love!
The Circus is available for funding through November 23, 2014.
