I was gonna write a fun open thread and ask y’all about your Thanksgiving plans, but then the Ferguson grand jury bullshit came down, and NOPE.
Not feeling very thankful just now.

I’m just so exhausted by the wrong reactions to this happening and I’m on the flipping other side of the ocean. The stupid trolls that flame every fire, the super ignorant that like to parrot “No proof”, “He’s a thief” and all the other lies.
Urgh.
Social media was actually better than I expected. None of my friends posted anything but support, and their racist-ass friends had all had their asses well and truly handed to them before I saw the threads, so I got through most of the day without yelling at anyone. Then I went out to wait for my kid to get off the bus and the other mom said something vague like “Can you believe what’s going on in Ferguson?” so I replied, “I know, it’s a mess.” And then she started talking about how she couldn’t believe people were rioting over a thug who got what he deserved and I swear my brain made a screeching sound. I tried to explain why she was very very wrong, but she didn’t listen to a damn word I said so I eventually changed the subject before I started actually screaming at her in the street.
“Got what he deserved.” That KILLS me. (And I’ve seen it several places.) Who the FUCK are you, to determine who DESERVES to live and who deserves to die? You know who decides that? A jury of your fucking peers, depending on the state in which you live. This man (fine, he’s an adult, I’ll buy that argument) did not get a jury of his peers because he was shot. In the street. Nobody deserves to die. /endrant
(Sorry. That one really, really gets me. I just go into rage mode every time I see it.)
I’ve been arguing with my sister all day about the “riots and looting.” Her main argument is that Mike Brown would only be remembered by the violence and I pointed out that without the protests, he wouldn’t be remembered at all. It’s very easy for those of us who benefit from the system to sit back and judge the response to the non-indictment.
I went to sleep angry, I woke up angry. There’s a lot of anger. I’ve avoided social media a bit because I can’t handle the sadness. But I feel you.
Luckily, I follow the write people on all counts and the assholes on facebook have kept themselves hidden. So I guess I’m thankful for that.
Totally with you. Luckily my FB and Twitter feeds seem to be full of understanding the gravity of situation, and there have only been a few instances of not-so-closet racism that needed stamping out. Ugh. It’s just awful all around.
