It has been unusually warm here in Seattle this February. It hit close to 65 the other day which means no-coat weather. It also means everyone got to see my awesome new Sleater-Kinney shirt I have been wearing.
1. “Fangless” by Sleater-Kinney
Seeing them live at their first show in almost 10 years was fucking amazing. We were ten feet from the bandthe whole concert. This is easily one of the best tracks off the new album, which is amazing.
2. “The Legend of Chavo Guererro” by Mountain Goats
Not only did we get a new Sleater-Kinney album and tour this year, we also get new Mountain Goats and tour. Needless to say, this girl has tickets to the Seattle shows of both bands. The new Mountain Goats album is all about wrestling and I am so excited for it to come out. This is the first track that has been released.
3. “Touch Me I’m Sick” by Mudhoney
I have been reading Everybody Loves Our Town, which is the oral history of grunge. I started listening to a lot of the bands that were involved in the scene that I hadn’t really before. Mudhoney is number one on that list. They were supposed to be the biggest thing to come out of Seattle, even bigger thanNirvana or Soundgarden. They obviously didn’t reach that peak.
4. Kanye West being Kanye West
His amazing performance on SNL 40 challenged are perceptions about what a performance should be. I personally think him lying down on the floor during “Jesus Walks” was fucking amazeballs. Sia and Kanye seem to be kindred souls.
5.”Shake It Off (The Perfect Drug)” Taylor Swift vs. Nine Inch Nails
This remix is flawless.
6. “The Woodpile” by Frightened Rabbit
Thanks to my friend Lulu for introducing me to this awesome Scottish band. Dude has a great brogue as he sings!
7. “Elan” by Nightwish
We also get a new Nightwish album this year, the first to feature newest vocalist Floor Jansen. My friend Eleanor is super obsessed with Nightwish and she won’t shut up about how they are the greatest band ever. Well, Ellie this is for you.
8. “Get By” by Talib Kweli
Talib is amazing. Quality is one of my favorite hip hop albums. I love this song.
9. “Batches and Cookies” by Lizzo ft. Sophia Eris
Lizzo opened up for Sleater-Kinney. I had no idea what to expect, but she was pretty fucking great. Sophia Eris is her touring DJ as well as another MC on their label. This is song is hella catchy.
10. “Bandages” by Hot Hot Heat
A forgotten classic. I love me some Hot Hot Heat.
