It has been a tough week. I am still dealing with the upcoming family gathering I will not be a part of. I am also weathering a shitstorm of anger from my mother over some trite happenings. Thank the maker for good tunes. It’s pretty much one of the few things keeping me going.
1. “Private Hell” by The Jam
I just heard this song for the first time and it really hit home. I have been feeling like my life has been one huge mistake.
2. “Clampdown” by The Clash
In my suggested videos while watching the Jam, I forgot how powerful live Clash videos are. Joe Strummer just was a man possessed on stage. I have always loved this song. It perfectly captures a lot of my anger at the moment.
3.”Colours” by Grouplove
I have been rediscovering my Grouplove love again. It’s only been like a year since I was obsessed for a short period of time.
4. “White Sky” by Vampire Weekend
Slowly becoming my favorite Vampire Weekend song, “White Sky” is super underrated. It has the perfect storm of fun and seriousness.
5. “Don’t Wanna Fight” by Alabama Shakes
The new album is amazing. I am glad I am finally giving it a listen after being caught up in my Sleater-Kinney hole for the first few months of 2015. Brittany Howard has such a great voice and her guitar skills are pretty on point.
6. “Anne Arbour” by The Get Up Kids
I am excited to see the Get Up Kids for the first time this year. They are on tour for their 20th anniversary. This is my favorite song by them because it encapsulates everything that they are as a band. Catchy music, melancholic lyrics, and energy for days.
7. “3030” by Deltron 3030
The titular track off of their debut album, Deltron 3030 combines three amazing people at the height of their individual games, Del tha Funkee Homosapien (MC), Dan The Automator (Production), and Kid Koala (Turntables/Samples). The guest musicians include Damon Albarn who used this project to inspire his Gorillaz work. Del’s flow on this song gives me chills every time.
8. “Ocean Soul” by Nightwish
I might never reach the height of my good friend, Eleanor’s fandom, but I have come to appreciate Nightwish as a band. Sometimes I just want some very dramatic music in my life and Nightwish is my go to for that. Tarja is a fantastic singer and the drama that surrounds her leaving the band fascinates most Nightwish fans.
9. “Cookie Cat” by Steven Universe
Can we talk about how awesome this show is? Because it is. Also who doesn’t get Cookie Cat stuck in their head when they see it.
10. “Not Ready To Make Nice” by The Dixie Chicks
This is how I feel about someone.
What has everyone been listening to this summer so far? I need more songs to keep me appeased!
One reply on “Ten Songs Keeping Me Sane This Week: Private Hell”
I’ve been obsessed with the new Florence + the Machine album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. You may enjoy two singles from the album: I’m interpreting What Kind of Man as a “Who does this?” response and St Jude is about accepting a breakup. The album was written as Florence Welsh was going through a breakup and wanting to make some changes to her life, so the whole album is intense and beautiful.
I hope the family situation gets easier with time. You’re a great writer and contributor to PM, and you deserve good things. :)
