This Open Thread Has Had a Weird Week

Last week I went to a job interview that, had I gotten the position, would have required me to travel to training seminars on L. Ron Hubbard’s management theories. Yes, I’m still laughing my ass off. (And yes, I was infinitely relieved not to get that job, no matter how badly I need one. And a bit ashamed that I didn’t just walk out as soon as they mentioned his name in the same sentence as “genius.”)

What weird things have happened to you lately?

Hillary is a giant nerd and former Mathlete. She once read large swaths of "Why Evolution is True" and a geology book aloud to her infant daughter, in the hopes of a) instilling a love of science in her from a very young age and b) boring her to sleep. After escaping the wilds of Waco, Texas and spending the next decade in NYC, she currently lives in upstate New York, where she misses being able to get decent pizza and Chinese takeout delivered to her house. She lost on Jeopardy.

I was working in what’s known as a Developmental Kindergarten which is a class for kiddos who are delayed enough to not be successful in a regular Kinder class. I was wearing sandals, with a bit of pearl-colored nail polish remaining from a pedicure in April. One little boy notices that one of my big toes has nail polish on it while the other doesn’t. Little Boy is intrigued. Little Boy gently touches each of my big toe nails. Little Boy starts to pick off a piece of dead skin on my middle toe. I was FINE with the toe nail touching-kiddos that age are pretty tactile. Felt a need to put a stop to the toe-skin picking.

Yes! Weird week abounds. My job continues to be horribly stressful, I went to a TERRIBLE orientalist hot yoga class (and walked out 25 minutes in), and today did Nia, which was basically free dance and GREAT. Hurrah for weird workout routines.
