Sometimes we all just need a good laugh. I fall asleep to comedy each night because somehow those funny people soothe me off into dreamland. I tend to also consume it a lot in general, so I bring you my ten favorite current comedians.
1. Aziz Ansari
Aziz is probably currently the funniest person on the planet. He has honed his skills and gotten better with each special. His bits have made it into inside jokes in my life.
2. Rye Silverman
This one is personal for me. Rye is an amazing trans woman from Ohio who released a great album this year called Intimate Apparel, which is totally worth picking up for $7.99 on Amazon. I also happen to be friends with her, so maybe that’s colored my opinion of how funny she is. Not really. She is really fucking funny.
3. Kumail Nanjiani
Kumail is everywhere. From Portlandia to Silicon Valley, he has popped up in so many things in the last few years, because he is really really fucking funny. He deserves to be on everything. His stand-up special Beta Male has some of the best jokes I’ve heard. It’s worth checking out just for his take on watching porn in a Muslim country at 12. This piece about his experience with Call of Duty:
4. John Mulaney
John makes me laugh because he has channeled a lot of the Mitch Hedberg delivery. It isn’t quite as stream-of-consciousness as Mitch, but the way jokes are delivered remind me heavily of Mitch. His two specials are way better than the stupid TV show he had on Fox. I still want to try the Salt and Pepper challenge at some point.
5. Maria Bamford
I like Maria because she is weird, and I am weird, so that is probably why. She deserves a lot more credit and probably deserves to be way more famous than she is. I know her style isn’t for everyone so that’s probably why she hasn’t broken huge like Sarah Silverman.
6. Jen Kirkman
She’s just funny. I have a soft spot for vulgar women.
7. Paul F. Tompkins
Ever since I heard him on Comedy Death Ray, Paul has been one of my favorites. He’s just my kind of odd.
8. Amy Schumer
Amy has skyrocketed in the last year since her TV show took off. I am also glad she seems to understand that she fucked up with her racial jokes a few years back. I am glad that sometimes people can actually give a good apology and learn.
9. Chelsea Peretti
Brooklyn Nine-Nine helped me find out who she is. Her stand-up cracks me up so much. Her stand-up special on Netflix is totally worth the watch.
10. Retta
What I appreciate about Retta is a lot of her stand-up is way different than her character Donna on Parks and Recreation.
Unicorns, who’s your favorite comedian? I hope to learn some cool new people I don’t know.
