I run into this something when I realize that people don’t necessarily want a critical perspective on things. What I see as perfectly civil academic disagreement can come off as antagonistic in the “real” world.

Yeah, I actually kind of love the idea of being so in touch with my own body. I just can’t stand the rhetoric that goes with it.

Or they can only have control with a man to help them chart their cycles. It’s so weird. I just do not understand.

A college professor taught me the word “casuistry” when it came up in office hours during a conversation we were having about a presentation I was slated to give on John Donne. It has two definitions: the first […]

I love, love, love the way you showed what was wrong with these. I couldn’t articulate it, but I felt it. And isn’t there almost something about the fact that it can be co-opted in rage-inducing ways that suggests […]

Oh yeah! I know doctors have to take lots and lots of exams–sorry if that wasn’t clear. (I lived (non-romantically) with a guy through medical school and part of his residency, so I know all about the exams.) I […]

Oh, I guess that’s why they’re always advertising for lecturers, not professors. I never really thought it through.

This sounds like what Stephanie said up above. I know in Germany there are multiple levels of higher degree-earning–was this in an American institution? Did he explain what you have to do to earn ‘professor’? I’m […]

Oh, interesting, I’ve never heard of that. Was there a particular reason for that? The head of our TA program at my university always told us that, actually, ‘professor’ just meant anyone who taught at a […]

I thought in the US lawyers could use Esq., too? Someone else needs to weigh in, but I was pretty sure they could. My dad was a clerk of court, and he used ‘Honorable’ in fancy situations. I thought that was […]

I can see people needing and valuing a fisheries expert. Not too many people are in dire need of an expert in the nineteenth-century novel. And judging by this year’s job market, even fewer than before!

Ha! My dad (not a Ph.D) goes on and on about that, too. He’s really into precision of language.

I always figure that if they sign with a first name as opposed to initials or full name, that’s an invitation to use first name. But it can be so awkward!

Just curious, where did you do your undergrad–I mean region and type of institution? I have a theory that “Dr.” is more common in the South, but I haven’t really subjected it to rigorous testing :)

My grandfather, who had a Ph.D. and taught at a university for many years, never called himself “Dr.†because, he said, he wasn’t “that kind†of doctor, a title he felt should be reserved for medical doctors. I’d […]
