The Eyes Have It: Jack-O’-Lanterns

The only pie you will make with these pumpkins is a cutie pie!
Fall is upon us. This means the store shelves and restaurant menus and my belly are filled with delicious things flavored with pumpkin. Delicious, delicious pumpkin.
The reason I want to write broadly about fall foods, apart from the little thrill an alliterative title gives me, is because today was the first really chilly day of the year and I hated it and I need a reason to enjoy this ridiculously cold season. So here’s an ode to fall foods, the […]
I love Adding Spices to Boring Things by our own Hattie McDoogal. I add things all the time, spices that I know will make the food taste like I want. Lately, I have even started to tweak recipes. To adjust them to my taste, or my family’s, or even to “make them better” in my […]
The other day, my mother ended up having to rush out to pick people up and wasn’t going to be able to put together her pumpkin stuff. Looking for something to do, I spied the canned pumpkin. Now, I’ve never made pumpkin pie before. But knowing that those cans of potential deliciousness might go back […]
Is everyone sick of pumpkin-filled things yet? I think it’s some sort of North American rule that we need to consume pumpkin baked goods from Canadian Thanksgiving until American Thanksgiving. Even if that isn’t the official rule, it seems to me the accepted, unspoken rule.
The other day, as I was sitting in a seminar, I realized that there was something new in the air. I took a whiff. Was it hope? No, it was definitely not as good as hope. Was it Fall? No, it definitely wasn’t as utterly soul-crushingly miserable as the season that heralds with pathetically flashy […]
It feels like fall in earnest now. The crisp cool air. The wooly sweaters. The leaves changing colors on the branches. It’s like the J. Crew catalog! But to anyone who will listen, this is also a season that calls out a challenge. It says: PUT PUMPKIN IN EVERYTHING! Well, Fall, I’m calling your bluff.
I’m totally going to get a reputation for being a terrible baker. I posted a few months back about my tres leche cake gone wrong, now I’ve gone and made some terribly ugly bread. We’re going to learn what went wrong together, readers. Learn from my atomic pumpkin loaf of shame.
I don”™t bake. Baking involves following precise instructions, taking careful measurements and distinguishing between things like baking soda and baking powder. None of which is easy to do after my customary four or five glasses of wine while cooking. So I”™m always looking for good, easy recipes to add to my files under “dessert” (known also in my house as “breakfast”). This recipe appealed to me because it essentially calls for taking several ingredients that you might find lying around during the holidays, dumping them in a bowl and baking them.
Now is the winter of my very contented taste buds. As much as I hate the cold, I love stuff flavored with pumpkin. The pumpkin pancakes at IHOP? I eat roughly my weight in them from October to January. Ben and Jerry’s Pumpkin Cheesecake? I would take a pint from a baby and not even […]
