Lunchtime Poll: Sportsball

What sports have you played?
In honor of the biggest sporting event in the U.S. having taken place this weekend, this week’s edition is looking at the most popular sports in several countries. We’ll start in the place I lived for two years.
Here’s my earworm this week.
In late July, the athletic wear company Under Armour unveiled a new ad campaign featuring gorgeous badass ballerina Misty Copeland of the American Ballet Theater. The campaign, titled “I Will What I Want,” immediately became the subject of much publicity and discussion all over the Internet. Countless outlets, including USA Today, announced it under the headline, […]
In which fashion is tone deaf not once, but twice.
In honor of the big sporting event that took place last night in the States, I’ll devote some stories to sports, but I’ll take care of other news, too (and hopefully give some levity from some depressing news).
Oh dear. There is just so much wrong with the world this week. A little bit of good news, but a lot more that’s positively rage-inducing. At least there’s an awesome Stephen Colbert smackdown! (As usual, trigger warnings for pretty much everything apply.)

Fallon Fox came out as a transwoman MMA fighter in March after being threatened with being outed. The biggest […]
This week had a strong mix of analysis, fun and dancing.
Being from the San Francisco area, I was one of many locals horrified by Chris Culliver’s homophobic remarks last week (about how he’d never play with a gay team-mate – “We don’t got no gay people on the team. You know, they gotta get up out of here if they do. Can’t be with that sweet […]
According to my Facebook feed, there was some sort of championship football something or other that happened this weekend. I’m not sure. I was napping.
They still act like football is a man’s game, and it’s really starting to get on my nerves. This feminist has positioned herself in the heart of macho dudeliness, and sometimes it isn’t pretty.Â
SUP (stand-up boarding, also known as paddleboarding) is apparently the thing all the kids are talking about these days. A friend was keen, so we duly showed up at Grand Canal Dock in Dublin on a rainy Thursday evening, armed with swimsuit and towel and no clear idea what to expect. Four lessons later, I’m […]
