I want to talk about entitlements. Not the kinds Republicans talk about (although I will get to that) — a kind of entitlement that every single person born in the United States has access to, just because of accident of birth, and is so systematic that we forget it is there.
Well, the news in the U.S. has almost exclusively focused on the current government shutdown, so let’s see what’s going on in another part of the world, shall we?
In June 2007, I graduated from college and decided there wasn’t much reason to stay. With an economy already in decline and no bites from any employers, I told myself I would leave the US before September 1, 2007. I left mid-August and I’ve been on the road ever since.
